Building on the phenomenal success of its Greenwich data centre, the IT infrastructure service company BIS has announced the launch of its latest server hall at the South East London facility. The self- contained 350 sqm unit offers space for 130 high density equipment cabinets and total capacity for 450Kw of cooling.
The new server hall is a true N+1 configuration with its own standalone M&E installation, built to the highest standards complying with the latest green data centre initiatives. Current research shows that deployment of the latest concept in data centres (NGDCs, or next generation data centres) has stalled. The concept is compelling: it is the evolution of the data centre from simple storage and retrieval into an efficient and yet cost-effective service-centric business tool. At its heart is virtualisation: of servers, of desktops and of storage. But the process of virtualising a traditional storage and retrieval data centre still worries many IT Managers. (more…)
The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), one of the world’s leading research organisations, has published some startling figures about business on the Internet. If the Internet were an economy, its business would be the fifth largest economy in the world, behind only the United States, China, India and Japan. It is no less startling in the UK, where Internet business is already the fifth largest economic sector, already ahead of healthcare, construction and education. But BCG makes clear that this is just the beginning. The UK web economy is growing at 10.9%; well ahead of the 8.1% average for other G20 economies. In 2010, more than 12.5% of all UK retail trade was conducted on the Internet. By 2016 this is expected to grow to 23%. (more…)
Attitudes towards cloud computing seem to be changing. Demand for public cloud services will continue to grow, but interest in using the public cloud infrastructure is lessening other than for software development. The driver for this is IT’s increasing desire for more advanced computing capabilities such as virtualisation. (more…)
