New green data centre policy initiatives for EMEA countries

In order to ensure the sector is keeping up with important and necessary green initiatives, the industry green data centre consortium, Green Grid, has put together a very useful report on the implications of EMEA policies.

The report document by the Green Grid summarises the various policy initiatives across 12 EMEA countries, as well as relevant EU initiatives, and focuses on four key areas: government regulation; relevant voluntary mechanisms; financial incentives for deploying low carbon technology and practices; and the policies which add financial costs. Are business leaders losing faith in IT?

According to a recent study conducted by Vanson Bourne and sponsored by Cordys, yes, business leaders are losing faith in IT to reach their business goals. The study gathered the views of 650 business and IT leaders across Europe, including a third from the UK, to understand the perceived link between business developments and IT. Cisco Nexus overcomes the STP ‘infinite loop’

As networks grow, with the introduction of data centres in particular, with Layer 2 domains spanning multiple locations and data centres, switching through the network becomes much more complex. Networks rely on redundant paths as backup in case the primary path fails, but configuring a complicated network of switches running STP in a large Layer 2 domain can get a little complex to handle in today’s world. FSA Regulation Poses Problem for Sector

From 14th November 2011, new FSA rules and regulations came into effect that meant that all financial services companies and call centres must record all relevant calls, SMS text messages and emails. This mobile recording legislation from the FSA hopes to increase transparency and accountability in the sector, but it also means that financial service providers are now under an even greater strain in terms of data storage. SPLA – A Tailored Solution to Service Provision

Traditionally, software-as-a-service (SaaS) and infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) needed to be purchased in bulk with a license agreement that committed you to at least one year. This made purchasing for data centre suppliers like BIS quite difficult. We would have to calculate the expected demand and make an initial capital investment in the software in order to provide for our clients. However, with the growth of the cloud market, companies are now beginning to offer SaaS on what are called Service Product License Agreements (SPLA). (more…)
